Waxing - Care, Tips & Facts

Waxing does NOT make your hair grow in thicker or coarser. You are born with all the hair follicles you will ever have. Your genetics and hormones control your hair growth.

Discomfort associated with removal of hair by this method will decrease as you schedule maintenance appointments – this diminishes the opportunity for the hair from taking a strong root which in turn means less pain for you.

Is this your first time? Congrats! We have a convenient checklist to help you prepare for the big day. No pressure on your first visit.

Pre-Waxing Checklist:
  • We recommend waxing appointments be scheduled every 4-6 weeks where the hair reaches a length of ¼ inch or more.
  • It has been at least 4 weeks since your last wax or 3 weeks since you last shaved.
  • You are not on any skin-sensitive medications. (ie: Accutane, Retin-A, Hydroxy Acids) Make sure you let your esthetician know if you are taking any medication that may make your skin prone to extra sensitivity.
  • You have not engaged in heavy exercise or swimming prior to service.
  • You have refrained from extended sun exposure 48 hours prior to waxing.
  • It is not suggested that you use peels (glycolic, AHA, etc.) or dermabrasion on the waxing area under any circumstances for up to 24 hours prior to receiving a skin wax.

Waxing Tips
  • Take an Ibuprofen 30-45 minutes prior to service to reduce pain.
  • Apply a numbing cream such as Take It Easy Numbing Cream 15 minutes prior to service to reduce pain.
  • Take a warm shower and lightly exfoliate the skin. This will provide an easier exit of the hair follicles and ensure a smooth wax.
  • Try to avoid hot tubs, hot showers/baths, sunbathing, and exercise before your waxing appointment.
  • Do not apply any heavy creams, gels or oils that may prevent the wax from adhering to the hair. Keep the service area clean and dry.
  • We suggest you avoid alcohol and caffeine 24 hours before your wax. Stimulants in the system can cause the skin to be extra sensitive.
  • In cases where your body hair is very long, it is best to trim it down so that waxing is more comfortable. If you are unsure about the length of hair, our estheticians will trim it for you, but it is always better to be a bit long than for it to be too short.
  • Female clients may find that they are more sensitive during or right before their menstrual cycle and may want to avoid making appointments 3 days prior and after the cycle has completed.

Post Waxing
Now that you've been waxed, here are a few things you need to know.

For the next 24 hours:
  • Apply a cold wet cloth as needed to reduce any redness or irritation.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that will allow the skin to breathe and minimize irritation.
  • Avoid applying any heavy creams, gels or oils that may irritate the skin.
  • Avoid hot showers or baths, heavy exercise, swimming and suntanning.
  • It is best not to exfoliate the skin for 2-3 days after your wax. We suggest you exfoliate regularly after the procedure to help prevent ingrown hairs.
  • We suggest that you do not have sex, yep that’s right we said it, no sex for 24 hours post wax.

Until Your Next Visit
  • Try to avoid shaving between your waxes, as shaving causes the hairs to become very coarse. Coarse hair can be difficult to wax.
  • We suggest you wear plain cotton underwear after your waxing procedure, as lace or un-breathable materials can cause irritation in the area.
  • Apply Tend Skin or PFB as needed to fight any pesky bumps or ingrown hairs.
  • Exfoliate your skin daily with a loofah or a body scrub such as the Éminence Pear & Apple Sugar Scrub to prevent ingrown hairs.
  • Remember to book your next appointment in 4-6 weeks!
